Yesterday, the Ethiopian Catholic Church in C2, Mamelodi West, filled with the weight of unbearable grief as family, friends, classmates, and neighbours gathered to say goodbye to 14-year-old twin brothers Bonolo and Bohlale Makena. The emotional funeral service, held before the boys were laid to rest at Garsfontein Cemetery in the east of Tshwane, became a powerful expression of a community’s pain and its unwavering demand for justice. Bonolo and Bohlale were remembered as loving, respectful boys who brought warmth to their home and church. Baptised members of the Ethiopian Catholic Church, they were due to be confirmed in December. They loved soccer and played for All Stars Football Club. Their days were filled with the ordinary joys of school, sport, faith, and family, until Friday, 2 October 2026, when their mother, Merriam Makena, returned from work and made the devastating discovery. She found her sons lifeless in their bedroom, both with multiple stab wounds. The home that should have been their safest place became the scene of their brutal murders. No forced entry was reported, and the motive remains unknown. At the service, the heartbreak was raw and collective. Bishop Mashilo Mangena, who is also the family spokesman, spoke of the twins’ faith and the family’s struggle to find peace while praying that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to book. Neighbours described the agony of raising children only to lose them so young and so violently. Deputy principal Christine Slabbert captured the mood when she said they were gathered with heavy hearts to say goodbye to young lives. Mourners repeatedly called for the killer to be arrested and for the twins to receive justice. Their mother, together with aunts, uncles, and cousins, now face a future without the boys who meant everything to them. The family is receiving counselling and community support, yet nothing can restore what was stolen from them in their own home. JustAdvocacy stands firmly with the Makena family and the people of Mamelodi. Children should never die violently inside their homes. This senseless loss is a wound to our nation and a reminder that the protection of our children is a shared responsibility. We urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to contact the South African Police Service immediately. Share what you saw or heard. The investigation continues, and recent reports indicate that a person has been taken in for questioning. Justice must not be delayed or denied. Rest in peace, Bonolo and Bohlale. Your light is not extinguished. We will not forget you. We will not be silent until those responsible answer for this crime. Protect our children. Demand better. The fight for justice continues. #JustAdvocacy #JusticeForMamelodiTwins #BonoloAndBohlale #ProtectOurChildren #MamelodiWest
