Suliman Carrim’s lawyer has told the court that his client should be granted bail because he suffers from a heart condition and anxiety, and that remaining in custody could trigger a panic attack. Carrim appeared on Friday as the State asked for a postponement of the bail application, saying it needed more time to verify his residential addresses. Prosecutors also questioned the circumstances of his arrest at OR Tambo International Airport, including the amount of luggage he was carrying when he was detained. His lawyer maintained that Carrim had a return ticket and was travelling with his wife on a religious journey to Pakistan, with a stopover in Dubai. The defence argued that these details, together with his medical conditions, support his release on bail while the matter continues. Carrim was arrested in connection with allegations that he failed to appear before the Madlanga Commission after being summoned in relation to its investigations. The State’s request for more time comes as prosecutors seek to complete the necessary checks before the bail application proceeds. The case highlights the tension between ensuring an accused person appears in court and addressing legitimate health concerns raised by the defence. As the proceedings are delayed for verification, the public will be watching closely for the next steps and for the outcome of the bail application. #JustAdvocacy #MadlangaCommission #SulimanCarrim #BailApplication #ORTambo
