Suliman Carrim stood before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court today claiming he had not taken his psychiatric medication, that his mouth was dry, he felt dizzy, and he remained under the same medical condition he had raised with his counsellor. The court was not convinced. Arrested at OR Tambo International Airport while preparing to leave the country after repeatedly failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission, Carrim’s explanations for his absences and his sudden fitness to travel overseas were closely scrutinised. The state argued he posed a flight risk. His bail application was effectively denied for now, and he has been remanded in custody. For months Carrim cited ill health to avoid returning to the commission, yet he was intercepted with luggage as he prepared to depart. South Africans have watched too many high-profile figures attempt to evade accountability through delays, medical claims, and sudden travel plans. Today the court drew a line. Justice requires more than statements of illness after the fact. It requires facing the process when summoned. Carrim remains behind bars while further verification continues. This is a reminder that no one is above the law, not businessmen, not political figures, not those who believe their status protects them from answering for their actions. We stand for accountability. The families and communities who suffer while investigations drag on deserve a system that acts when people try to flee justice. The process continues. #JustAdvocacy #SulimanCarrim #MadlangaCommission #BailDenied #Accountability
