IF YOU'RE IN SALES AND YOU'RE STILL SAYING, "Hey, I'm just following up." You've already positioned yourself as irrelevant. You've already positioned yourself as irrelevant. And the reason is that one line tells the prospect three unconscious things about you. It tells them that you don't have leverage. It tells them that you bring no new value to the conversation. And worst of all, it tells them that you are not worth prioritizing. Here's what elite level sales people do instead. They don't follow up, instead they follow through with strategic interruption, value insights and psychological positioning. When you say, "I'm just following up with you," your prospect's brain is categorizing you as someone of low priority, needy and easy to ignore. Because you're sounding like every other salesperson who's trying to sell them something. So try something like this instead. Hey John, based on our last conversation, I ran a few numbers and it looks like staying where you are at is going to cost you much more than we previously thought. Do you have a second to break that down with me? Or hey Alex, something came across my desk this week that completely reframes the issue that you previously mentioned. It's subtle, but it changes the entire equation. Do you got a second to break that down with me? But why does this work? Because now you are triggering curiosity through uncertainty. You're positioning yourself as a strategic thinker, as a trusted advisor and not a salesperson. And key takeaway here, you're leveraging earned insight to earn their attention. Remember this, high status communicators, they never ask for time. Instead, they create a reason to make time. So get rid of, "Hey, I'm following up with you." That phrase, it's just a credibility leak and you don't need it. It's costing you business. Start leading with leverage.
