The Financial Habits That Have Saved Me the Most Money
As a mid-30s govt girlie becoming debt free
Giving every peso a job $
I don't let my salary just sit in my account anymore. Before the month starts, every peso already has a purpose like rent, groceries, savings, investments, sinking funds, or fun money.
Because when money has a job, I'm less tempted to spend it on things I never planned for.
Building a Small Cushion (OMAF)
Having a One-Month-Ahead Fund changed everything.
Instead of living paycheck to paycheck, slowly built enough savings so one paycheck funds next month's expenses.
It reduced financial stress and gave me breathing room whenever unexpected expenses came up.
Practicing the Pause
I rarely buy something immediately anymore.
If it's not essential, I give myself time before checking out.
Most of the time, the excitement fades... and I realize I never really needed it. Impulse buying has become much less of a problem because of this simple habit.
Automating My Investment
I automated my Pag-IBIG MP2 contributions through salary deduction. That means I save before I even see the money.
No reminders.
No willpower.
Just consistency.
Having Regular Money Dates
Every payday (and usually once a week), I sit down with my budget.
I check my spending, update my sinking funds, review my goals, and make adjustments.
A budget only works if you actually look at it.
Making My Budget Match My Real Life
I stopped trying to create the "perfect" budget.
Instead, I looked at my actual spending patterns.
If I consistently spend more on groceries and less on something else, I adjust my budget.
A realistic budget is much easier to stick to than an ideal one.
Choosing Progress Over Perfection
Some months I overspend.
But instead of giving up, I simply adjust and keep going.
Financial freedom isn't built by being perfect. It's built by staying consistent.
Money isn't changed by one big decision.
It's changed by small habits you repeat over and over.
