This is one of the few surviving sacred cemeteries in Britain. And it only exists because a whole town believed dead bodies could poison the wind. We are high up on the mountain at Cefn Golau. Down there in the valley, it's 1832 and a horrific cholera outbreak has just hit the Tredegar Ironworks. People are dropping dead in hours and nobody knows why. Before medical science figured out that it was contaminated water, the leading theory was miasma. The belief that the disease was spread by foul and noxious air. The panic got so bad that the townsfolk refused to let the cholera victims be buried in the local churchyards. They feared that the graves would literally breathe the disease away from the living into the town. So they dragged over 200 bodies all the way up here to this bleak, isolated mountain ridge. Why? Because they believed that the heavy mountain winds would safely blow the deadly mist away from the living. The tragic irony is that the water down at the town stayed poisoned and fleeing up here didn't save them. Today, it's just a ghost town of headstones gotten on a hillside. It's a beautiful, eerie reminder of how fear changes history. Hit follow for more Welsh history!
