I have always despised the phrase “I’m your mom, not your friend,” and I’m so glad that my mom never said that to me. Instead, she told me her role as my mom came first, and her role as my friend came second and that she would make decisions that were best for me even if they made me upset. She was in no way permissive & I knew she was the authority figure. She also talked about WHY she was disciplining me & the person she wanted me to become, which made consequences more impactful. I respected her because I felt respected BY her & I wanted to be a great kid & teen because I had internalized the lessons she taught me & I wanted to make her proud, not because I wanted to avoid her punishing me. Unfortunately, my mom died of cancer almost 7 years ago, but we were very close my entire life. I felt BOTH loved & liked by her and I want to do the same with my girls 💗 Make sure to follow me for all things evidence-based parenting and no-tears sleep training from a certified teacher, longtime nanny & mom of 3!
