5 things to do BEFORE completion day Because when you’ve waited MONTHS to get the keys, the last thing you need is to realise you’ve forgotten something important 😭🔑 First-time buyers: SAVE THIS 1. CHECK WHEN YOUR BUILDINGS INSURANCE NEEDS TO START Don’t automatically assume you wait until completion day. Depending on your purchase and lender requirements, you may need buildings insurance in place from exchange of contracts. Check with your solicitor/ conveyancer exactly when YOU become responsible for insuring the property. One of those boring jobs you really don’t want to discover at the last minute. 😥 2. CONFIRM EXACTLY WHAT’S HAPPENING ON COMPLETION DAY Don’t be afraid to ask the questions that feel obvious: 🔑 Who tells me when we’ve completed? 🧾 Does my solicitor need anything else from me? 🏡 Who will contact me? When am I actually allowed to collect the keys? Completion day can involve a LOT of staring at your phone. Knowing the plan beforehand makes it slightly less chaotic. 3. GET YOUR MOVING-DAY PLAN SORTED Removal company? Van hire? Family members being bribed with pizza? 😂 Get it organised BEFORE completion day. But remember: completion isn’t guaranteed at 9am. The keys are normally released once the money has transferred and legal completion has taken place. Don’t plan your entire day around getting the keys first thing in the morning. 4. SORT YOUR POST REDIRECTION + ADDRESS CHANGES You are about to realise your address is attached to approximately 97 different things. 🤯 Think: Bank accounts Driving licence Car insurance Work Subscriptions GP/dentist Electoral register Important accounts A Royal Mail redirection can also help catch anything you’ve forgotten while you gradually update everything. 5. PACK A FIRST-NIGHT BOX Do NOT bury everything you need inside 36 identical cardboard boxes. 😂 Keep one box/bag easily accessible with things like: Toilet roll Phone chargers Medication Toiletries Kettle/tea/coffee Bedding Clothes for tomorrow Basic cleaning supplies Pet essentials if needed PERFECT BATHROOM ACCESSORY Basically: anything you’ll be furious about having to search for at 11pm BONUS BECAUSE THIS DESERVES ITS OWN SLIDE 😂 FIND OUT HOW YOU’RE ACTUALLY GETTING THE KEYS Estate agent?
