a second chance at first impressions

one of my favorite shows just came back for its second season, but it also did something very, very weird. They released a new pilot. If you haven't seen Adults, it's a show about five young adults living in New York, not a totally inventive premise, but it's a pretty funny show. It's sort of in the vein of Broad City and some of its stars got their start on this very app. The show has not been a huge hit, though it is well-reviewed and I think it's worth your time. But one of the reasons they think it hasn't been a huge hit is that the pilot is kind of aggressively off-putting in its opening. The head of FX talked to the New York Times about this and said that while the show's ratings had not been huge, the one thing they did do is dig into the streaming data via Hulu and Disney Plus, and they realized that a lot of people didn't make it past the first episode, and a ton of people didn't make it through that first scene. I won't go into the details. You should watch it to figure it out. Maybe watch the new pilot first if you haven't seen it, which is just kind of at the extreme end of the sort of humor they go for here, offensive to people who haven't gotten to like these characters or the show yet. But what they've done now is released a new pilot that is still a good episode for people like me who've already watched the show. It's just an extra episode along with season two, but it is now season one, episode one. It's a more palatable way into the show. So if you have not watched Adults yet, that's where you should start.
