September 11, 2001 was one of the darkest days in American history. Thousands of people had been killed, New York was in chaos, and first responders were running toward devastation. That same day, Donald Trump appeared in a live television interview and, when asked about his property at 40 Wall Street, pointed out that after the World Trade Center fell, his building was supposedly now the tallest in downtown Manhattan. It wasn’t—70 Pine Street was taller. Years later, Trump would repeatedly describe himself as having been at Ground Zero and say that he “helped a little bit” clearing rubble. Investigations have found that he was near Ground Zero in the days after the attacks, but researchers have been unable to verify that he participated in the cleanup as he described. A retired FDNY official who spent months at the site said he had no knowledge of Trump doing so. There are legitimate political disagreements about Donald Trump. Then there are things he actually said and claims he actually made.
