Could you win the world’s largest game of tug of war? 🪢 The biggest tug of war in the world, and one of the best festivals in Japan in October. 📍 Naha Great Tug-of-War, Route 58, Naha, Okinawa, Japan Every October Naha closes its main highway and 15,000 people a side pull a 40-ton rice-straw rope, a ritual that goes back to when Okinawa was the Ryukyu Kingdom. It's been in the Guinness Book since 1997, and afterwards the rope gets cut up and handed out as lucky charms. How to do it: 1. 2026 date is Sunday October 11. Parade on Kokusai-dori from 11:30am, the pull on Route 58 from 2:30pm. Free, no ticket. 2. To pull, get onto Route 58 early and pick a side. East is the male rope, west the female. Grab one of the 280 hand ropes. 3. Stay for the cutting. Staff hand out pieces of rope, and it's meant to protect your home for the year. 4. Shuri Castle's rebuilt main hall opens to the public on November 23 2026, seven years after the fire, if you can stretch the dates. 5. Pick east. They've won three in a row.
