the most romantic boat ride in new zealand is lit by maggots 🛶✨ The most famous glowworm cave in New Zealand, and a day trip from Auckland you can pair with Hobbiton. 📍 Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Waitomo, New Zealand Waitomo is a limestone cave in the North Island where thousands of glowworms light up the ceiling above an underground river, and the tour ends with a silent boat ride underneath them. The cave was handed back in 1989 to the Māori family whose ancestor led the first trip in, and a lot of the guides today are his descendants. Here are 4 tips for visiting: 1. Book ahead. It's open 9 to 5 every day, the tour takes about 45 minutes, and adults are NZ$85. The visitor centre is cashless. 2. You can't take photos in the Glowworm Cave. If you want your own shots, the Ruakuri Cave photography tour down the road lets you bring a tripod. 3. If a boat sounds too calm, do black water rafting in Ruakuri Cave. You float under the glowworms on an inner tube (3 hours, from NZ$199, 12 and over). 4. Stay quiet on the boat. They're trying to eat 🤫 Share this video to the Mio app and it'll save the cave straight onto your travel map. #Waitomo #WaitomoCaves #Glowworms #NewZealandTravel #cavetour
