Europe's biggest food fight, and it's a re-enactment of a beheading 🍊 📍 Battle of the Oranges, Ivrea, Piedmont, Italy Every carnival, nine foot teams fight horse-drawn carts with about 500 tonnes of Sicilian oranges that were never going to be sold. It remembers a miller's daughter who beheaded the tyrant who claimed her wedding night, and the town rising up behind her. How to do it: 1. 2027 battles run Sunday February 7 to Shrove Tuesday February 9, afternoons. Violetta is revealed at the town hall on Saturday February 6. 2. Buy the red hat from any stall before you walk into a square. It marks you as a spectator. It won't save you from ricochets, so stand behind the nets if you want to stay clean. 3. Want to throw? Email the carnival foundation in December or January and they'll put you in touch with a team. Outsider sign-ups open 10 January. Fees vary by team, up to about €120 for all three days including food, wine and oranges, plus around €50 to €80 for the uniform if it's your first year. 4. Go Sunday morning for the fagiolata, free bean stew cooked overnight in giant pots in every district. 5. Wear your oldest clothes. You'll smell like marmalade until Thursday. Send this video to the Mio app and it'll save Ivrea straight onto your travel map. #BattleOfTheOranges #foodfight #ItalyTravel #TurinDayTrip #ItalianFestivals
