A 34-year-old woman is recovering after surviving a terrifying kidnapping and sexual assault in Kempton Park after she was lured into a vehicle she believed was her booked e-hailing ride. The attack, reported by The Citizen, highlights the ongoing dangers women face when using ride-hailing apps and the urgent need for stronger safety measures and swift justice. The incident unfolded after the victim had lunch with a friend at Mosquito Park near her workplace. She requested a lift through an e-hailing app. A Suzuki arrived. Shortly after she boarded, she realised the driver was not heading to her destination. Instead, the vehicle travelled along Pomona Road. A second man then entered the car and restrained her. The driver turned into a private yard used for housing trucks. There, a third suspect climbed into the vehicle, placed a white cloth over her face, and sexually assaulted her. The woman lost consciousness. She regained awareness the following morning still inside the vehicle near the Simba factory. Her attackers later dropped her off close to the Rhodesfield Gautrain station and took her cellphone before fleeing. Despite the trauma, she made her way to the Kempton Park SAPS station and formally opened a case. Police spokesperson Dipuo Ditshego has confirmed that investigators have requested digital records from the ride-hailing platform. These include trip logs, driver information, and vehicle registration details that could help identify those responsible. At the time of reporting, no arrests had been made. This case follows a recent separate kidnapping attempt on another woman in the same area. Detectives are also examining whether the attack shares any operational similarities with a series of deaths involving women found in Kempton Park and Olifantsfontein in recent months. Authorities have stressed it is still too early to draw firm links between the incidents. Every woman deserves to travel safely. Fake or hijacked e-hailing vehicles remain a serious threat. Ride-hailing companies must strengthen verification systems, real-time tracking, and emergency response protocols. Passengers should share trip details with trusted contacts, verify the vehicle and driver against the app before entering, and trust their instincts if something feels wrong. We stand with this survivor. Her courage in reporting the crime is vital. We call on the police to prioritise this investigation, identify and arrest the suspects, and ensure they face the full force of the law. Gender-based violence and opportunistic crimes against women cannot continue unchecked. Share this post to raise awareness. Demand better protection for women using public and app-based transport.
