A decomposed body discovered at Blue Waters beach in Strandfontein on Monday remains unidentified, leaving the family of missing man Slade van der Walt in a painful state of uncertainty while they await DNA and pathology results. Western Cape police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana confirmed that the body was found at approximately 6.30am on 5 October 2026. Strandfontein SAPS has opened an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery. According to reports, a fisherman first spotted the body floating near the shoreline and immediately alerted Quemic rangers. By the time officials reached the scene, the remains had washed ashore. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, no positive identification could be made at the location. Among the limited visible clothing was a pair of black or dark-blue Adidas tracksuit trousers. It has been suggested that the individual may have been in the water for several weeks, although police have not officially confirmed the estimated time frame. The discovery promptly raised questions about a possible link to Slade van der Walt, who went missing at Strand Beach several weeks earlier. His family, friends, police divers and members of the local community have been actively involved in ongoing search efforts. Van der Walt’s relatives rushed to the scene after being notified. However, family spokesperson and cousin Caitlin Hoedemaker was clear that no identification has yet been confirmed. “As far as I’m aware, they are going to be doing DNA testing and the pathology test to confirm. So, for now, all we can do is wait,” she stated. Caitlin explained that the initial contact from police had briefly raised hope, but the family was later informed that certain indicators suggested the body might not belong to Van der Walt. She also noted confusion around details of the clothing and the recovery process, and appealed to the public to refrain from speculation while forensic work continues. “If it is not the body of Slade, it means that someone else was found, and it’s bringing closure to another family,” she added. Despite the uncertainty, the search for Van der Walt has not been abandoned. His family remains determined to continue looking for answers. Caitlin emphasised that relatives are not prepared to treat his disappearance as a closed matter. “Enough is never going to be enough until you find that person,” she said. The condition of the recovered remains underscores the significant challenges involved in identifying bodies after extended exposure to the ocean. For the time being, the identity of the deceased person is still unknown. Van der Walt’s family continues to wait for official forensic confirmation before reaching any conclusions, while the broader search for their missing loved one goes on. #JustAdvocacy #MissingPerson #Strandfontein #CapeTownNews
