On Monday, 19 October 2026, Warrant Officer Ennice Nortman, a 53-year-old Crime Intelligence officer attached to the North West Provincial unit in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District, was struck by a BMW SUV while crossing the driveway at Lichtenburg Mall. She was on duty. Emergency services rushed her to hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries later that evening. The driver, 23-year-old Akilesh Gupta, was arrested and has been charged with murder as well as contravention of the Immigration Act. He appeared in the Lichtenburg Magistrate’s Court on 21 October and was remanded in custody until 27 October. Multiple reports and circulating information identify him as a Pakistani national who was in the country illegally. CCTV footage of the incident has spread widely on social media. Descriptions from those who have viewed it say Warrant Officer Nortman was walking toward a raised pedestrian crossing when the vehicle accelerated and struck her, continuing over a small island and colliding with other objects. Police have asked the public not to share the footage so as not to compromise the investigation. The fact that this is being treated as a murder case, rather than a simple traffic accident, tells us the circumstances are being taken seriously. Ennice Nortman was a mother, a wife, a colleague, and a public servant who was simply doing her job. She leaves behind a family now facing unimaginable loss and a police service that has lost one of its own. Her death has sparked raw anger across South Africa, particularly because it involves an officer killed while on duty by someone who, according to the charges, should not have been in the country. This is not an isolated conversation. Families, communities, and ordinary citizens continue to raise concerns about crime linked to illegal immigration, weak border control, and the slow pace of accountability. When a serving police officer can be run down in a mall parking area and the driver faces both murder and immigration charges, people are right to demand answers. We call for a thorough, transparent investigation and for the courts to handle this matter with the seriousness it deserves. No one should be above the law, and the fact that the accused is already facing immigration-related charges must form part of the full picture. The family of Warrant Officer Ennice Nortman deserves justice, and the public deserves to know that the system will respond firmly. May her family, colleagues, and loved ones find strength in this difficult time. May her name not be forgotten, and may this case lead to real accountability. Rest in peace, Warrant Officer Ennice Nortman. Your service is remembered. #JustAdvocacy #JusticeForEnniceNortman #CrimeIntelligence #Lichtenburg #SouthAfrica
