What's in Season: January
Grocery Store Edition 🛒
January is the undisputed king of citrus season, bringing varieties you won't find in summer.
Blood oranges are at their peak, offering a stunning crimson color and a distinct berry-like flavor.
Keep an eye out for Meyer lemons, a cross between a lemon and a mandarin with floral, edible skin.
We call them polite lemons.
Grapefruits are juicier and sweeter right now than at any other time of year.
Below ground, root vegetables have been quietly sweetening all winter long.
Parsnips taste like carrots met a potato and decided to get nutty. Roast them until caramelized.
Turnips are the most underrated root. Try them roasted with honey, or mashed with butter like potatoes.
Winter greens like kale and collards are less bitter now because the frost converts their starches into sugar.
Your January shopping list just got an upgrade.
