If you're thinking of coming to Ivey, which is Canada's best business school, here are three reasons why you should not. The first thing is mandatory classes. Every single day from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. you are stuck in classes. On top of that, if you miss more than five sessions for one class, you might be barred from writing the midterm, the final, or some other large assessment. This seems okay until you realize that if you miss those five classes because you're hospitalized, it doesn't matter. If you miss those five classes because you had an interview, it doesn't matter. Every single missed class is going to be an unexcused absence with the exception for religious absences only. There are people that are hospitalized that just have to tank their grades because Ivey is not very flexible. The second reason not to come here is that it's not as helpful for recruiting as you might think. A lot of people will see the employment report and think that they are guaranteed a job if they enter Ivey, but I'm here to tell you that that's not true. These days it's so competitive that you should really be trying to get an internship in your first and second year, and Ivey isn't helping you at all in those first two years. On top of that, a lot of recruiting timelines will start before you even enter Ivey. The people online at Ivey that you might see as successful are not successful because of Ivey. They were successful before entering Ivey. Finally, the last thing that I'll touch on is that Ivey is not the same school it was many years ago. I think Ivey gets a lot of its present day clout from the fact that they had really, really past successful alumni. But you also need to remember that back then, Ivey had way less students. Every single year, Ivey enrolls 800 new students. We've had guest speakers come in where they were Ivey grads and they've had really successful careers, but that was also back when Ivey had only 160 students. The pipelines that existed back then don't exist anymore. We once had a guest speaker come in who was an alum of Ivey, talk about how she had a job at Goldman L.A. and didn't get the return offer because of the recession. Then her Ivey mentor, which was a structured mentorship programme back in the day, reached out to her and wanted her to interview for JP Morgan New York. She went down, interviewed, got the job, and got to start her career at JP Morgan New York. But that was 18 years ago. Nowadays, there isn't a mentorship programme anymore. I haven't seen anyone get a job at Goldman L.A., nor have I ever seen anyone get a job at JP Morgan New York.
