So there's this guy who made $150K selling cake to software companies. And as somebody who made no money selling software to cake companies, I feel like there's a very important lesson here. So I've had a sunscreen brand for the last seven years. I spent a good chunk of last year building a software platform to help brands manage and automate their wholesale. And on paper, it sounded great. I had a tech background, I was solving my own problem, and I even had a few brands using it. But I basically made no money. And meanwhile, this guy's doing the exact opposite. Instead of selling software to brands that made cake, he's selling cake to software companies for things like employee birthdays, new hires, and to even replace cold email. And it's kind of genius because he took a commodity product and changed the customer. He targeted companies that already had budget and spend on employee perks. Like, these are VC backed startups, and they have money to spend. So instead of competing in a crowded consumer market, he moved upstream to a customer that's easier to sell to. It's literally what YC companies do, because most of them are actually selling their own products to other YC startups. This guy did it without being in tech at all.
