There's been a lot of online discourse about Hudson Williams' Met Gala makeup. Basically, a lot of people don't like it. They say the execution was bad. I'm not going to comment on his makeup, but in the week since the Met Gala, there's been a lot of people doing their own versions inspired by the look. And a really common comment on those videos is, oh my gosh, this looks so much better. Like, you should have done his makeup for the Met Gala. Like, I don't understand why the makeup artist didn't just do this. I get you're trying to hype that person up, but if I'm being completely honest, no shade to these people recreating the look, but a lot of them probably wouldn't have been able to do a better job. First off, a lot of these looks are more toned down versions of the Met Gala makeup, like they're not as dramatic, which is totally fine, but it's also not the same look. And it's a lot easier to make something look better if you're making it look a little more wearable. And secondly, there is a huge difference between doing makeup on yourself in your own home with no time constraints versus doing somebody else's makeup for an event like the Met Gala. I've been doing my own makeup for forever. I'm super, super good with it. I'm obviously super, super good with my own features. Anything you see me post on social media, I've blocked out more than enough time to make sure that I get everything just right. Doing somebody else's makeup is a completely different story. Not only are you usually working with a shorter time limit, you also have to work with features that you might not be as familiar with, but you also have to work with what they might be comfortable with. Like I read somewhere that Hudson wasn't necessarily comfortable with having eyeliner in his waterline, which for me and many others is something that's like, oh, that pulls the whole look together. But that doesn't really matter when you're doing makeup on somebody else. I'm not saying that you can't critique his look. I think any makeup done by a professional is open for constructive criticism. But I think seeing someone that recreated the makeup on themselves in the comfort of their own homes and then saying, oh my gosh, you should have been their makeup artist instead, is not a very fair statement to make.
