I feel like I'm going to be called so old for this take, but I genuinely think it makes me so sad to see girls in high school and even middle school skip the drugstore makeup phase and go straight to Sephora for their makeup. I know I literally sound like a grandma saying, kids these days, but it's true. I mean, I think a lot of people from all different age groups overlook drugstore makeup when there are so many amazing products. But I think especially for teenagers that drugstore makeup phase used to be like a right of passage. But now it's all about having the trendiest most expensive high-end brands. There are a couple reasons I think teenagers are skipping the drugstore now. First being the prices are not what they used to be. I remember I used to walk into CVS with a $10 bill and be able to get multiple things. And now when you go in there, half the stuff is double digits in price. But another big factor in this trend is social media. Sometimes it really is that damn phone. It's not the norm to start your beauty journey by watching influencers on YouTube and TikTok. And because of that, I think a lot of young girls think that they should be using all the same products that these influencers do. But to my younger audience, I just want to remind you that those influencers are usually older and make a lot more money and get those products in PR. If you're 15 and just starting out with makeup, it's totally normal to start out at the drugstore. And honestly, I think that it's better. If you're going to try something new and have it not turn out the way you wanted, it's better to waste a $15 product than a $50 one. It's not like I don't understand being in high school and wanting nice makeup. I begged my parents for months for the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette. And every time they shot me down, I would just go to the drugstore instead. And that means when I finally could afford to buy the palette myself in college, it felt like A, I appreciated it more, and B, I actually knew how to use it. At the end of the day, makeup is makeup and a lot of the best makeup artists got their start at the drugstore. So don't feel pressured to buy the most expensive products because you feel like that's what everyone is doing.
