WHAT DID DAVID UNDERSTAND ABOUT HIRING THAT MOST CHRISTIAN BUSINESS OWNERS DON'T? This is Biblical Business WITH ADAM WEISNER BIBLICAL BUSINESS When David became king, extraordinary men started to gather around him. First Chronicles 11 calls them David's mighty men. What we read is very interesting. We read about what these men had already done. Verse 11 introduces Jeshua. He wielded his spear against 300 he killed at one time. In verse 22, we meet Benaiah. Scripture calls him a doer of great deeds, says he struck down two heroes of Moab. Then it says he climbed into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. He faced an Egyptian, was like seven feet tall. The Egyptian has a giant spear, he has a staff. He overtakes him, grabs his spear, and kills him with his own spear. These men had history and shown that they could perform under pressure. Chapter 12 describes more of the men that David gathered. Verse 2, it says they were bowmen and could shoot arrows and slingshots with either the right hand or the left. Verse 8 says that they were mighty and experienced warriors, experts with shield and spear. David was choosing people with proven ability, people who had developed their skill. But as you keep reading, you discover that their ability was only part of the reason why they were so valuable to David. Back in chapter 11 and verse 10, it says, these are the chiefs of David's mighty men who gave him strong support in his kingdom. Chapter 12, verse 33, it says some of the troops were equipped for battle with all weapons of weight to help David with singleness of purpose. At verse 38, it says all these men of war, arrayed in battle order, came to Hebron with a whole heart to make David King over Israel. They were not simply capable, they also had singleness of mind. Wholeheartedly committed to what the Lord was doing through David. Then in chapter 14, the Philistines come against David. Got these experienced warriors around him, highly skilled, highly trained, proven. But it says at verse 10 that David inquired of God. He asked the Lord, should I go up against the Philistines? And the Lord tells him to, go, and he wins the battle. But then the Philistines come back and they come to fight him again. And you would think he already knew he was going to win, and he has the battle to prove it. But at verse 14, it says David inquired of God, and God said to him, you shall not go up after them. Same enemy returned, but God gave him different direction. When you put these together, you come up with a biblical formula for hiring great people. Proven ability, whole hearted alignment, and direction from the Lord. That is what most Christian business owners, the CEO's, don't consider. Before your next hire, ask these three questions. Has this person proven they can carry the weight. Is their heart fully aligned with the assignment? And have I actually sought the Lord before bringing them in
