What if the opportunity to grow your business cost you the life you actually want? I'm Adam and this is biblical business. Baby, I'm living water flowing. Ain't no man, I'm repping what I'm singing. I had a conversation today with a business owner who was considering merging with another company and selling off part of his ownership. The deal would give him more capital, more scale, more people, more resources and most certainly more profit. On paper it could look like the most obvious next move. Right now, he owns the whole company. makes great money. Works from home, he controls his schedule, he goes to all of his family events, he hangs out with his wife. This deal could increase his income, but it would definitely take his time. I just ask him the simple question. Why? What is this additional scale and profit for? What is the purpose? What's the point of doing this if it's going to lead you to a life that you actually don't want? The book of Ecclesiastes chapter 4 verse 6, it says better as a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and driving after win. This new thing might give you more money, but it's going to require both of your hands and you're going to be striving after win. More responsibility, more money, more pressure is going to simply get you scale, but it's not going to get you to the place that you actually want to be. The Lord might be calling him to something bigger, might be using the business to scale, to impact more people's lives, to use the business for his glory. But profit alone is not a good enough reason. And this doesn't just apply to people who are considering a business by. It applies to anybody considering something big. Job, a move, a partnership, and opportunity that looks really impressive from the outside. But before you say yes, you have to know what you're saying yes too. You also need to know why. What's the point? What are you trying to get to? Because what he's trying to get to, he already has. So what should he do? I told him three things. First is to wait on the Lord. Isaiah 40:31 says, but they who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like Eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint. Second was to talk to his wife. My wife is is my greatest advisor. And so what I told him is to have a conversation with his wife and share his heart, not the technical side of things, although he can share that too. But it's really about the heart. What are you afraid of and what are you excited about? And she's going to speak into your life differently then outside council. Third is put the GPS in the navigation. What is your purpose beyond just making money? That is the first of the seven laws that I teach. Purpose beyond profit, state it in seven words or less. Where are you trying to go. If this doesn't move you toward that, that's your filter. You can say no very easily. Bigger opportunity is not automatically a better one. The question is, does it move you toward the life and purpose that God has called you to? If it gives me more money, but less freedom and less time and presence with the people that I love, what exactly am I gaining? You can grow a business or your career and shrink your actual life. And if you don't know why you want more, more will eventually own you.
