Why I Left My $400k/yr Job In Private Equity

I worked even harder at that job because I wanted to, then I even did a Coleman. Coleman when you're in banking, it's like, "Oh, I just need the next great thing." Which, at the time was private equity. On Saturdays and Sundays, I would rip the fkn phones off the wall. Because my job was to source the very best deal that the firm could find. Ultimately, after a year and a half, I ended up sourcing the largest deal that we had ever done, proprietarily. I actually remember the exact moment... I was walking with one of my bosses into a steak dinner with a founder that I had sourced. He looked at me and he was like, "You know, John, this could be you one day." And I remember I was, I was hustling super hard. But I'd sourced the deal. And you realize, a lot of this stuff is empty once you achieve it. I remember being like, "Oh my God, I would rather blow my brains out." To only do this for the rest of my life. It was such an intellectually interesting job. But I was clearly searching for something more. I didn't know what it was. That's the thing.
