WIRECUTTER TASTE TEST The Best Canned Tuna

Canned tuna is the workhorse of the entire tinned fish universe. We did a brand-concealed taste test of over 30 cans of tuna. There were some really excellent cans, but there were some cans that were pretty upsetting. Fishwife is definitely one of the trendier brands on grocery store shelves right now. We really liked how firm and dense the tuna was. It had a really lovely olive oil that, while it wasn't overpowering, it was pretty neutral, the quality still definitely came through. My favorite by far, from all the tunas that we tasted, was Ortiz. We liked how tender and moist and flaky this tuna was. And it was also really richly savory. This is definitely a splurge-ier pick. This is not one that you want to mash into mayonnaise, but it's perfect for putting over a Niçoise salad, enjoying on its own with some crackers, and really making it the star of the show. On the lower end of the price range, we have Trader Joe's Chunk Light Skipjack Tuna in water. It's definitely meatier and like, has a very marine quality to it. Kirkland Signature was our solid white packed-in-water pick. This is probably one of the most neutral tunas that we tasted. It was pretty well salted, it's very clean and briny. Some people said it reminded them of chicken.
