This company found a way to make 500 million by making their calculators mandatory in schools even though the design is bad and students hate it. And when you find out how they were able to do this, it's probably gonna piss you off. Because this is the TI-84 calculator. And you probably know this calculator cause you had to use it in school. You might remember just how bad it really is to the other options on the market for calculators. The screen is worse than a Game Boy. It runs on triple A batteries and the chip inside is literally from the 1980s. On top of all of this, it was also so expensive, like 100 plus dollars. So why do schools require you to get this specific type of calculator? It's because of how much money this company invests. Yes, they pay textbook companies to be sponsored. Yes, they got the College Board to approve their calculator for the SAT. Yes, they trained a whole generation of teachers on the TI-84 calculator. But why can't a better, cheaper calculator just come in? Well, it's also because every year they spend over a million dollars lobbying the government to keep this specific calculator as the only mandatory option. Push some states to make Algebra 2 class required. Because they care about people learning algebra, right? No. It's because this class requires a calculator and it would mean they would be able to sell more calculators and make more money as long as this was a required class in schools.
